During the month of April, I finished my remaining 2 service hours at UMC finishing my 24 total service hours for the semester. I remained in the ortho trauma unit and performed the same tasks I usually do. I'm usually asked to restock the refrigerator in the nourishment room when I come in before I sit at the desk to take calls from patients. I am occasionally asked to check patient files to make sure that the names and numbers on the files match up with the names on a list given to me. This month marked the last month of school where we had the NBME, our last presentations, and our last exam. The NBME exam was difficult, but everyone was able to do well given that it was only worth 10% and there was a big curve/boost to the grades. Once I got through the NBME, I pretty much was ready to be done with school and kind of mentally checked out, and I would be surprised if I was the only one who felt that way. I don't think I will be going to graduation despite originally having plans to do so. The main reason being that I believe I missed the deadline to purchase a cap and gown according to the email I received earlier in the semester. The deadline was early-mid March, and I had not realized it until the middle of this month, so I don't think I would be able to go even if I wanted to given the missed deadline. I received that email in the beginning of March and was not thinking of graduation at the time. I was still thinking of what's left in terms of school work.

 This past Sunday (9/24/23) I volunteered at UMC for 3 hours in the radiology department. During my interview prior to my first volunteer day, I chose the radiology department after being informed that they were in need of volunteers. I decided to volunteer at UMC specifically mainly after hearing about the volunteering opportunity from my peers during my undergrad years at the University of New Orleans. I had volunteered at UMC before during my undergrad years where I volunteered in both the ED and radiology department. In the ED, I sat at the liaison desk and brought visitors back to see a patient. January Blog

During the month of January, I have volunteered for a total of 6 hours (2 hours every Sunday). I made my return to UMC on 1/14/24 after our winter break ended and was placed back in the ortho trauma unit. In my time there, I was tasked with answering calls from patients then notifying their respective nurses of their needs. I also helped organize folders and wiped down desks with sanitizing wipes. I was also asked to restock the refrigerator with drinks for the patients in case they asked for anything. There was one instance where I entered a patient's room to help him open some bottled drinks and place a straw in since he was unable to do so himself. During my first day back, my trip home was annoying as there was a parade going on in the area that I was unaware of, so I was caught in traffic for about 2 hours before I was able to get moving. February Blog

 During the month of February, I have volunteered at UMC for 6 hours (12 total hours for the semester as of this month). I did the same tasks of answering patient calls then informing the nurses of the patients' requests and restocking the refrigerator in the nourishment room with juice cocktails that are given to patients if they ask. One things that has always made me nervous during my volunteer shift is when I pick up a patient call, and I can't understand what they are saying. This has been due to a couple reasons such as the patient was not articulating clearly or the background noise (maybe from the TV) drowns out what they're saying. Those type of calls has always been difficult as I always needed someone's help to determine what the patient is asking for.
